AppleとMSのフォント表示の違いとその哲学
同じようにフォントをアンチエイリアス表示しているのだけれど、Mac OSとWindowsでは見え方が違う。これは、それぞれ考えていることが違っていて
- Apple generally believes that the goal of the algorithm should be to preserve the design of the typeface as much as possible, even at the cost of a little bit of blurriness.
- Microsoft generally believes that the shape of each letter should be hammered into pixel boundaries to prevent blur and improve readability, even at the cost of not being true to the typeface.
ということだそうで。
記事中の図を見ると、確かにそうだなぁと。Windowsの表示の方が読みやすいけど、言われてみれば、フォントの線の太さは印刷したときよりも、細くてすっきりしてる。日本語だとまた複雑ですけどね。
いずれはPCも高解像度化して、こういう細かい職人技は必要なくなってくるんだろうけど、モニタの解像度はムーアの法則的には大きくなってないすね。10年前は液晶ではないものの、17インチでSXGA(1280x1024)。17インチSXGAといえば、今でも主流ではないでしょうか。ケータイは買い換えるたびに解像度が上がり、3インチでWVGAだったりするわけですが。。
それよりも、この記事会社で読んでて、「俺、画面縦向きにしてるじゃん、サブピクセルレンダリング台無しじゃん。」と思ったというオチ。
